Genetics Unit Final Exam 1-14-14

October 15th, 2013

Students who scored below 70% on the Protist Quiz (in your child’s binder) or the Cell Organelle quiz (which will be returned by Friday) may correct and return their quizzes to me by November 13th for 1/2 point per corrected question.  Corrected answers should be written in pen next to the original answer.

The maximum score on corrected quizzes  will not exceed 70%.  I encourage everyone to correct their quizzes regardless of the score. These should be used as study guides for the final cell exam at the end of our unit.

  • Graded work: Graded work, that has been recorded in Powerschools is placed in the yellow “graded work ” folder next to the board. Students should check this weekly for returned graded assignments.  All graded work should be placed in the “Graded Work” section of your child’s binder for you to review.
  • Homework/Classwork & Vocabulary: I check notebooks for homework/classwork & vocabulary completion on Fridays. Students either receive a complete, incomplete, or a zero. This is where the final homework/classwork participation grade comes from at the end of each quarter.
  • We review the concepts assigned for homework during class throughout the week. Students should use the vocabulary and textbook work to prepare for assessments or lectures in class each day. I do not collect notebooks on Fridays. Students simply show me their work and ask questions about concepts if there are questions.
  • Notebooks: During the first quarter notebooks were taken up and checked for completion and organization. A rubric was stapled to the inside front cover of the notebook.  The second notebook check was given as an open notebook quiz. I did not take notebooks up. Students were allowed to use their notebooks and handouts to complete the quiz.  The open notebook quiz format is how notebooks will be checked from this point on at the end of each unit.

October 3rd, 2013

Dear Parents,

I am entering grades into Power Schools as quickly as I can. Unfortunately, due to system maintainence and numerous outages, it is taking an inordinate amount of time to enter recent quizzes, labs, etc.  I will be entering grades tonight through tommorow at 5 pm.  Power Schools will go down once again at 5 pm on Friday and I will be unable to access grades through the weekend.

I will enter the Weather Final Exam scores for the original exam first. After entering the original score, I will review the retake and enter the higher score. Please be patient with this and understand that I am working as quickly as possible to update grades.  All grades, including Weather Final Exam retakes, should  be entered before Friday at 5 pm.

Durant Science  7/3

Week of October 1st, 2013

Dear Parents,

Over 1/3  (40)  of my students neglected to complete the weekly vocabulary warmups and present their work to me on Friday. Students have 10-15 minutes at the beginning of every class to begin warmups.  The vocabulary was on my website and on the board every day for the past 5 days.  As we cover the material and discuss new concepts, I’ve found it extremely helpful for students to familiarize themselves with the basic vocabulary.  I’ve noticed that students who do work on these warmups, routinely pass the weekly quizzes and assessments quite easily.

Please speak to your child about making the most of the classtime that they are given to complete these assignments.

9-19-13

Dear Parents,

In order to allow students time to make test corrections, the Weather Unit Final Exam grade will be placed on next quarter’s report card.  I will make students aware of their grade this Friday.

  • As with all tests, students who score below 80% may retake a test after they have completed a “request to retest” form located on the whiteboard in my room.
  • They must also make test corrections in the room during lunch any day except Wednesday. I will be present to answer any questions during this time.

***IMPORTANT QUIZ UPDATE***

Dear Parents,

I am moving our final notebook check/quiz for the weather unit to Monday, September 16th. This will be an open note quiz. Students may use their notebooks and any handouts from the “Unit Work” section in their binders to assist them in the completion of this quiz.

Our Weather Unit Test will take place on Thursday, September 19th. Please use my weekly assignments postings, handouts, and notebook to study for this test. Students may see me any day other than Wednesday during lunch for help with the concepts covered during this unit.

Grades Update

Dear Parents,

  • New quiz grades and atmosphere project grades  will be entered tonight and tomorrow before interims go home.
  • Please check your child’s agenda for homework assignments every afternoon. Please also check my “Weekly Assignments” page for specifics on homework and classwork.
  • Students will need their binders and notebooks for our student led conferences. Graded work should be placed in the “Graded Work” section of your child’s binder.

I look forward to seeing you at our student led conferences on Wednesday.

8-19-13

Dear Parents,

I am still recording lab grades, quizzes, and notebook grades that were turned in late or turned in the week of trackout. If you access your child’s grades, please know that you are viewing an incomplete average at this time. I will have all grades recorded and available for you to access by Friday, August 23rd. The only grade that will not be recorded at that time will be your child’s weekly quiz that they will take on Monday, August 26th.

7-22-13

Dear Parents,

Quiz #1 and #2 have already been returned. Students need to pick these up from the graded work folder next to the whiteboard. These should be placed in the “graded work” section of the binder. Quiz #1 was returned last week and several students still have not taken care of this.

Students have until this Friday, July 26th to either make up or take a missed quiz before their grade will be entered as “0” in my gradebook. Students who were absent need to schedule a time to see me during lunch on Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday for any questions or to make up a missed quiz.

July 19, 2013

  • Please check the Weekly Assignments page. New powerpoints, vocabulary, and downloads are available every Sunday.

July 16,2013

Notebooks: For the first two weeks, on Friday, I will collect notebooks for a grade. After that, I’ll collect notebooks at the end of each unit. Depending on the length of the unit, I may collect notebooks twice during the unit. I’ll let you know a week in advance before I collect the notebooks. I’ll place the rubric inside the front cover of your child’s notebook with the grade and date at the top. Notebooks that are not turned in will receive a grade of “0” until a parent/teacher conference is scheduled and a plan for student organization and daily work habits has been established. Notebooks and projects turned in late will lose 10 points per day unless a note is received with a legitimate excuse for the late assignment.

  •  QUIZ/TEST RETAKE & MAKEUPS: See me on Friday during lunch with a fast pass to retake or makeup your first quiz. Remember, you must submit a retest form, see me one day during the week for tutoring, and complete test corrections before you can retake the first quiz. The same policy is in place for major assessments. After the first quiz, there will be no more retests for quizzes. If you’re absent for an assessment, you have until the end of the following week to makeup the missed assessment. You must schedule a time with me  during lunch to makeup the assessment.
  • Science Lab Safety and Equipment Quiz Friday July 19th. Check Assignments page for more information.
  • Students need a college ruled spiral bound notebook for each quarter. Please contact me at cmarion@wcpss.net if you need me to provide your child with a notebook.  I take a notebook grade every Friday. This grade counts as your child’s classwork/homework grade each week.
